What’s Next for QR Codes?

QR Code

The use of QR codes is on the rise, both by marketers and by the customers who scan them.  Already, half of all smartphone owners have scanned a QR code, and this should only increase as more marketers adopt the technology.

With QR codes growing in popularity, the big question for marketers is how will we use them? Today, the most popular uses for QR codes are discounts and product information, but the potential uses are unlimited. So what’s next?

A recent blog post on socialmediatoday.com makes some interesting predictions. The first is that QR codes will be used more and more for social voting: for example, QR codes that allow customers to add a Facebook “like” to a physical object or product. In effect, the article predicts that QR codes will allow us to interact in the real world in the many of the same ways that we currently interact online.

Another area in which QR codes are predicted to grow is in the use of QR code “shops”. Essentially, these are posters or billboards with photos of products that you can buy with your smartphone. Simply scan the QR codes of the items you want to buy and then check out to complete your order. Several retailers like Tesco and Peapod have experimented with these in the last year.

For a while now, many print and outdoor ads have also incorporated QR codes, and this is expected to really take off. The article predicts that in the near future, almost every billboard will feature a QR code that drives to a website or other mobile call to action.

Whether the predictions pan out as expected we’ll have to wait and see.  Either way, they provide some helpful inspiration as marketers think of new ways to take advantage of QR codes.
